Tools for District Directors:

Duties of District Director

 

 

 

1.      Local visits – The District Director should visit all locals in geographic area at least once a year.

 

2.      Annual General Meetings – The District Director should attend local annual general meetings whenever possible. Alternates should attend when the District Director can not

 

3.      District Meetings – The District Director must hold at least 1 district meeting and invite all local presidents or alternates, the district women’s coordinator or alternate; the NVP or A/NVP. This meeting should be held in the district and costs are covered by the Regional CEIU budget.

 

4.      Training – The District Director should be aware of any training needs in his/her district and promote these to the Regional Training Committee for resolution, either by organizing district training, or by referring the members to PSAC training, another districts training, or training on an individual basis

 

5.      Local Communication – it is the responsibility of the District Director to keep in contact with the Local Presidents in his/her geographic area on a regular basis and to become aware of the issues facing the members in each local

 

6.      District Communication - The District Director is, in most cases a part of the union management process and as such must know the issues in the district and must communicate these to management at the union management meetings. It is important that the District Director represent the views of the members in the district not personal views

 

7.      Regional Communication – it is the responsibility of the District Director to bring local concerns to the regional level. The District Director should pass on issues of concern to the NVP and to Regional Committees as appropriate. It is the responsibility of the NVP to pass these to management or to CEIU National when appropriate.

 

8.       Regional & National Communication – it is the responsibility of the District Director to pass on any regional or national communications that are sent to him/her to the local presidents for information or distribution

 

9.      CEIU Web Site – it is the responsibility of the District Director to promote the use of the regional web site with locals and encourage locals to have a local page that is updated regularly

 

10.  Labour Councils – it is the responsibility of the District Director to ensure that all locals in his/her district belong to their local labour council. The dues are paid by National CEIU

 

11.  Local Financial Statements – it is the responsibility of the District Director to ensure that all locals in his/her district submit an audited financial statement to National CEIU yearly and to follow-up with those who do not

 

12. Teamwork – it is the responsibility of the District Director to work with Local   Presidents to ensure that all locals have a full slate of elected officers and to inform the NVP if there is a problem   

 

13. Confidentiality – the District Director MUST keep information from Local Presidents and local members confidential. He/she must not share this with anyone, including the NVP or other REC members without the permission of the member involved. If the District Director seeks assistance from the NVP he/she can not name a member without this permission.

14. Trust – it is imperative that the District Directors create an atmosphere of trust in

       their dealings with the local members, the Local Presidents, the Regional

       Council and management. Day to day conduct and interaction on the job plays

       into the trust developed as well as conduct during union functions. The District

       Director does not need to have all the answers or to be able to resolve all issues,

       but the member needs to be able to trust that their issue will be taken seriously

       and passed to whoever is appropriate for action

 

15. Financial Claims – it is the responsibility of the District Director to have financial wrap-ups for events funded by the region completed and to the finance committee within 30 days of completion of event

Report paints stark picture of workplace mental illness

A new report suggests that nearly half of Canadian workers and managers will admit to having dealt with a mental-heath issue at one time or another, though many are reluctant to reveal their struggles to their employer.

The Conference Board of Canada recently undertook a national survey of more than 1,000 employees, nearly half of whom were managers.

Twelve per cent of the survey respondents said they were currently dealing with a mental-health issue, with another 32 per cent they had faced one in the past. (More here).

Vernon CEIU 20915 members joined CUPW in their strike action

Vernon CEIU 20915 members joined CUPW in their strike action today. Service Canada is co-located with the Vernon post office so it was a welcomed show of support for the CUPW members.  The Okanagan College Student Union and the Canadian Federation of Students also came out in support.

PSAC reaches three tentative agreements with Treasury Board

PSAC reached a tentative deal today for new collective agreements for three of its five bargaining units with Treasury Board. Agreements for the PA, SV and EB groups will go into force only if they are ratified by members in votes over the coming weeks.  Read more here
